Here’s Stompin’ Tom Connors at the ‘73 awards, where he picked up the Country Male Vocalist of the Year Juno. It was one of many — from 1971 to 1976, Connors took home the award every year. Note the fringe detail on his vest. Fringe trim would become a recurring fashion style for men at the Junos over the decade, as you’ll see in these next few slides.

Shania Twain hosted the broadcast in 2003 and treated viewers to six glorious, glamorous, hockey team-themed costumes, and we’re going to show you a few of them. First, she dared to appear on stage in the Ottawa Senators’ very arena in a sequined Leafs jersey. (That does impress us much.)

Look, we took Justin Bieber into our hearts long ago. But the fact is, our inspection of the volume of his collar vis-a-vis the bulk of a standard bow-tie strap leads us to surmise that this is a clip-on tie. We don’t hold it against him, though. This is Bieber 1.0. At the 2010 JUNO Awards in St. John’s, Bieber had just turned 16, and his hairstyle was already iconic.

  • Snazzy

You’re darn right he won the Songwriter of the Year Juno for “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. And Gordon Lightfoot wore this snazzy ruffled shirt, assertive tux, tinted lenses and a butterfly bow tie for the occasion in 1977.

The moustache. The denim. The scowl. The perm. It’s yeses across the board for Gordon Lightfoot, who struck a different sartorial chord at the 1980 Juno Awards.

At his induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the 2001 Junos, environmental activist/singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn wore a fleece because of course he did. Three earrings, a copper bracelet, John Lennon specs, and a second fleece completed the ensemble. He’s Ottawa-born, but his clothes scream Vancouver. He’s made a brilliant choice to face the March weather in Hamilton, where the ’01 awards were presented.

Well, we’ve put it off long enough. No Juno fashion review would be complete without a salute to toques, and no one can kick that off better than Bob & Doug. What are these hosers doing at the Junos? In 1982, Bob & Doug McKenzie presented the awards for Most Promising Male and Female Vocalists and Group of the Year. But you might be surprised by the rest of Bob & Doug’s Juno cred: not only did they take home the Comedy Album of the Year Juno in 1982 and 1984, but their album ‘The Great White North’ was nominated for the prestigious Album of the Year Juno in 1984. Other contenders included ‘The Nature of the Beast’ by April Wine, ‘Exit…Stage Left’ and ‘Moving Pictures’ by Rush, and the winner, ‘Loverboy’ by Loverboy. The Vancouver rockers swept the awards that year. And now, we take you back to more toque news.

“Our languages and our cultures spring from this place, this land. That was the message that I wanted to bring with this look,” said international style star Jeremy Dutcher of the custom cape he wore in 2019 when he won the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year. Canadian designer ZOFF and Edmonton-based Indigenous designer Luxx created the piece. Inside is written “We will succeed” in Cree. “As queer people, [myself, and ZOFF and Luxx] are bringing an aesthetic that I don’t think the media landscape or Canadians are necessarily ready for, but we’re going to get them there,” he told ‘Fashion’ magazine. We look forward to 50 more years of Juno fashion moments, from the inspiring, to the hoser-ific, to the transcendent.
