America’s Very first Outdoor Shopping Mall Was in Michigan

The Kalamazoo Mall was the pretty 1st outdoor pedestrian purchasing mall in the United States, building its debut on August 19, 1959. It was supposed as staying just a walk-through, with no site visitors, no through street, and no parking spots. Just a long stretch of properties where by folks could walk from store to store.

Pedestrians could shop, sit for awhile and talk, perhaps have a bite to consume, read through, or unwind. But primarily store.

There was a playground for little ones when mom shopped, a couple of fountains, a bridge above one particular of the fountains, and checkerboard sidewalks.

It all started in 1957 when the Kalamazoo City Fee arrived to the conclusion that their downtown enterprises ended up failing many thanks to the new ‘suburban’ malls.
