Black-Owned Manufacturers on Carnaby Street Spark Discussion on U.K. Retail Diversity

Carnaby Road is the coronary heart of British vogue, dwelling to the Rolling Stones’ flagship keep, hip makes these types of as Dr. Martens shoes, and the Liberty London division shop with its huge selection of classic models. The strip, viewed as the “Capital of Cool” when it featured the playful looks of the 1960s, has developed with the traits of the working day, but—like the relaxation of the industry—it has mostly excluded a person team: Black-owned businesses.

Kojo Marfo is trying to adjust that, with a shop identified as Black in Carnaby showcasing style, art, literature, and property decor from Black British business owners. “We needed a shop that would empower and connect underrepresented brand names to modern day-working day buyers,” Marfo says.

A banner on the storefront boldly declares: “Black-Owned Businesses” alongside a vibrant display of African-print fabrics. Within there are clothing strains from Black designers such as rapper Tinie Tempah, substantial-end lamps, jewelry sourced from West Africa, and a children’s part with textbooks full of Black people and Black dolls in African attire.
